Scandal-Plagued Fox News Loses Top Spot in Primetime Ratings as MSNBC Makes History

In case you haven’t noticed, Fox News has had a rough year. And a peek at the recent changes in primetime ratings is not going to make the folks running the conservative-leaning network any happier. In fact, as the channel begins to lose its iron grip as the top rated cable news network, its replacement at the top will only pour salt into the wound: liberal-leaning MSNBC.

Neilsen ratings from last week show that MSNBC took the top overall spot in primetime viewing from 7 p.m. to midnight. Led by the surge in ratings for Rachel Maddow this year, MSNBC edged out Fox News in total viewers during primetime hours by just under one hundred thousand people. From July 17th to July 21st, “the liberal network gained 2.34 million viewers, while Fox News had 2.25 million”, on average, during the 8 to 11 p.m. time period.
