With one answer to one question, Senator John McCain (R-AZ) managed to destroy the character of the entire Trump family. Asked by conservative publication The Weekly Standard about his thoughts on Donald Trump Jr.’s recently exposed secret meeting with a Russian lawyer who he thought had damaging information on Hillary Clinton that came directly from a the Russian government, Sen. McCain dropped the hammer. “I can assure you the people around me would not be inclined to do that kind of thing, especially not one of my sons. ‘Cause my sons—they’re in the military. You know, they’d probably be court-martialed.” Ads by Revcontent McCain has been among the harshest critics of the President’s since Trump mocked his war record during the campaign, so his reaction to this latest soap opera isn’t entirely unexpected. What’s been more stunning, however, is the relative quiet coming from the rest of the Republicans in congress. They spoke with their silence today by refusing to carry water for the White House as they furiously tried to quench the fires created by Donald Trump, Jr. While it’s too soon to say they’re running for the exits on this presidency, congressional Republicans are no longer rushing its defense, either. This marks a remarkable turn.
